I hope it gets people fired up!<br />Maori voters have consistently proven to be the most politically disengaged with the lowest voter turnout. Can a pluralist democracy where the voice of the indigenous minority are so consistently muffled really call itself pluralist?<br />Last election National swept to power on a wave of voter apathy and the lowest turnout in a generation helped along by the Maori Party which allowed the government to present a face of progressive multiculturalism while really doing very little substantive to address actual poverty and deprivation.<br />This time National are supported by the parties of white male millionaire racists out to protect privilege and sow division.<br />Maori are the sleeping giant of New Zealand politics. Sadly their voice is not often heard but when it is it can make or break governments as must be apparent to anybody who watched the 2005 election as the voting might of South Auckland swept away the hopes of Don Brash and his infamous 'Orewa' campaign.<br />Roll on Sept 20th, lets hope people come out in force to vote against racism...RichardGnoreply@blogger.com
