The best and worst Maori MPs for May

Well, it doesn’t take long for the tables to turn. Last month I named Hekia Parata one of the best performing Maori MPs - this month she is one of the worst. Tariana Turia and Te Ururoa Flavell didn’t even rate a mention, but this month they occupy the top positions. Rino Tirikatene wasn’t on the radar, but his push for Maori seats on the Nelson City Council and across New Zealand pushes him to the top list. True to form Hone Harawira rated as one of the best performing MPs last month, yet a dismal performance – by his own high standards – sees him fall off the radar this month.

  1. Surely Shane Jones rates a mention in this round up?

  2. I haven't mentioned Shane in this little blurb, but he's in the round up proper.

  3. Good assessment, although I wouldn't have put Rino in the best performing. I think Denise Roche deserved a mention also as she has been consistently providing advocacy and support for striking workers across the country including ports of Auckland workers, AFFCO workers, rest home workers. Many Māori work at the ports and for AFFCO. And she has been doing excellent work on gambling issues and we know problem gambling disproportionately effects Māori

  4. I completely forgot about Denise... def an oversight on my part. If I remember right she was strong on the pokies issue too.

  5. you also forgot to mention Te Ururoa's gambling success with his bill passing it's first reading. He's getting a lot of flack from those pokie trusts, you just need to google the "Flavell Bill" and he's doing it all for his people.

  6. Yes agree about Te Ururoa's gambling harm reduction bill. he should of been getting more credit for it but he didn't seem to be publicizing it much but I guess it has only just gone to select committee, so early stages yet.
